SMHA Evaluation Policy 2017/2018

 

 Objective:

-­-     General Game Understanding

-­-     Participation & Influence on the Outcome

 

Skating: (1 to 5 scale)

-­-     Can player skate with & without the puck

-­-     How does the player skate in game situation vs. skill session

 

Passing & Receiving: (1 to 5 scale)

-­-     Quality of passes

-­-     Does player share the puck

-­-     Does player support the puck

 

Positional Play: (1 to 5 scale)

-­-     Basic understanding of position and responsibility

 

Work Ethic: (1 to 5 scale)

-­-     Does the player have a willingness to work

-­-     Does the player demonstrate team play

-­-     What is the player’s attitude toward the scrimmage

 

General: (comments)

-­-     What is the player’s character on the ice

-­-      Does the player rank in the Top, Middle or Bottom

 

Explanation and Break down of ice time required per level.

 

Skill sessions will be approximately 1.25 to 1.5 hrs. There will be 4 x 20 minute intervals, with each interval being made up of a 5-­-minute instructional component and practice time and a 15 minute evaluation component. There will be a maximum of 30 players per session.

 

The number of skill sessions will be based on the number of players registered. Additional fees are charged for Rep tryouts and Rep tryouts will be allotted extra ice.

 

Scrimmages will be scheduled in 1 to 1.5 hour game slots depending on the level and whether they are internal scrimmages or exhibition games against other associations.

 

Coach Pick

Novice Coaches at Tier 1 and Coaches at Tier 1 and Tier 2 at all levels above Novice will have full pick of their teams from the top 30 to 40 players after the first cut. No player in this group is guaranteed a position and if a player does not make the team the player is not automatically put on the team the tier below.

Specific Level Evaluation Breakdowns

 

Initiation - All registered players will be divided into teams of equal numbers with a view to teams being of equal strength. Player movement will be looked at by the affected coaches with the input of the level director on a case by case basis.  Team sizes will be determined based on registration numbers.

 


 

Tom Thumb - Following 1 skill session and 1 scrimmage, teams will be selected by the Level Director with the input of the coaches with a view to all teams being of equal strength.

 


NOVICE 

Tier 1 Novice - There will be two Tier 1 SMHA Novice teams for the 2017-18 hockey season. There will be 1 skill session in which all novice players will participate and which will be set up and run by the level director in consultation with evaluators from the Association to complete the evaluations. The top players from that session, to a maximum of 40 players will be selected to participate in one or more scrimmages. The teams will be selected by the level director with the view that both team are equal.

 

Tiers 2, 3, 4, 5- Remaining players will participate in one or more scrimmages and/or skill sessions as determined by the level director in consultation with evaluators from the Association. The players will be placed into tiers.


ATOM: There will be 1 skill session in which all Atom registered players will participate and be evaluated by independent evaluators hired by the Association to complete the skill evaluation.

 

Tier 1 Atom -The players who pay the rep try-out fee will participate in 1 or more evaluation scrimmage(s). The top players from the skill session and scrimmage(s), to a maximum of 30 players and 4 goalies will be selected to participate in 1 more scrimmage. If requested by the Coach, there will be 1 coach practice. The Coach will select the team.

 

Tier 2 Atom - Those players who paid the Rep tryout fee who were not selected for the Tier 1 team will participate in one or more scrimmages. The top players from the scrimmage(s), to a maximum of 30 players and 4 goalies will be selected to participate in 1 more scrimmage. If requested by the Coach, there will be 1 coach practice. The Coach will select the team with the input of the level Director or designate.

 

Tiers 3, 4, 5 -­- Remaining players following the selection of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams plus those players who did not pay the Rep tryout fee will participate in one or more scrimmages and evaluated  by independent evaluators hired by the Association to complete the evaluations. The players will be placed into tiers using the scrimmages and the skill session ratings by the Independent Evaluators in consultation with the level Director. If there are multiple teams at any tiering level, teams will be drafted by the coaches with the input of the level Director with a view to all teams in a tier being of equal strength.


PEEWEE: There will be 1 skill session in which all Peewee registered players will participate and be evaluated by independent evaluators hired by the Association to complete the skill evaluation.

 

Peewee AA -­- There will be 1 or more scrimmages in which the players who pay the Rep tryout fee will participate. A maximum of 30 players including goalies will be invited to participate in the Ice Breaker Tournament. During the tournament the coach may release players and subsequently following the tournament, the Coach will select the final team. SMHA will be following the Hockey Alberta AA model, a copy of this is available on the SMHA webpage.

 

Tier 2 Peewee - Those players who paid the Rep tryout fee who were not selected for the AA team will participate in one or more scrimmage(s). The top players from the scrimmage(s), to a maximum of 30 players and 4 goalies will be selected to participate in 1 more scrimmage. If requested by the Coach, there will be 1 coach practice. The Coach will select the team with the input of the level Director or designate.

 

Tiers 3, 4 &5 Peewee -­- Remaining players following the selection of the AA and Tier 2 teams plus those players who did not pay the Rep tryout fee will participate in one or more scrimmages as evaluated  by the Independent Evaluators. The players will be placed into tiers using the scrimmages and the skill session ratings by the independent evaluators in consultation with the level Director. If there are multiple teams at any tiering level, teams will be drafted by the coaches with the input of the level Director with a view to all teams in a tier being of equal strength.

 


Bantam: There will be 1 skill session in which all Bantam registered players will participate and be evaluated by independent evaluators hired by the Association to complete the skill evaluation.

 

Bantam AA- Players who have paid the Rep tryout fee will participate in one or more practice sessions as determined by the Coach. The Coach will select a maximum of 30 players including goalies who will be invited to participate in the Ice Breaker Tournament. During the tournament the coach may release players and subsequently following the tournament, the Coach, will select the final team. SMHA will be following the Hockey Alberta AA model, a copy of this is available on the SMHA webpage.

 

Tier 2 Bantam -­- Those players who paid the Rep tryout fee who were not selected for the AA team will participate in one or more scrimmages. If requested by the Coach, there will be 1 coach practice. The Coach will select the team with the input of the level Director or designate.

 

Tiers 3, 4 & 5 Bantam -­- Remaining players following the selection of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams plus those players who did not pay the Rep tryout fee will participate one or more scrimmages as determined by the Independent Evaluators. The players will be placed into tiers using the scrimmages and the skill session ratings by the Independent Evaluators in consultation with the level Director. If there are multiple teams at any tiering level, teams will be drafted by the coaches with the input of the level Director with a view to all teams in a tier being of equal strength.


MIDGET 

15AA Midget - - Players who have paid the Rep tryout fee will participate in one or more practice sessions as determined by the Coach. The Coach will select a maximum of 30 players including goalies who will be invited to participate in the Ice Breaker Tournament. During the tournament the coach may release players and subsequently following the tournament, the Coach, will select the final team.

 

Midget AA-­- There will be up to 4 practice sessions with the Coach in which the players who pay the Rep tryout fee will participate.  A maximum of 30 players including goalies will be invited to participate in the Ice Breaker Tournament. During the tournament the coach may release players and subsequently following the tournament, the Coach will select the final team. Tier 2 Midget -­- Those players who paid the Rep tryout fee who were not selected for the 15AA or Midget AA team will participate in one or more scrimmages. If requested by the Coach, there will be 1 coach practice. The Coach will select the team with the input of the level Director or designate.

  

Tiers 3, 4 & 5 Midget -­- Remaining players following the selection of the 15AA , Midget AA and Tier 2 teams plus those players who did not pay the Rep tryout fee will participate in 1 skill session and 2 scrimmages as determined by the Independent Evaluators. The players will be placed into tiers by the Independent Evaluators in consultation with the level Director. If there are multiple teams at any tiering level, teams will be drafted by the coaches with the input of the level Director with a view to all teams in a tier being of equal strength.


 

Goalies at, Atom, Peewee, Bantam & Midget will have their own separate on ice skill sessions and will be evaluated during scrimmages by the coaches in respect of Tiers 1 and 2 and by dedicated IndependentEvaluator(s)fortheremainingtiers to determine an overall ranking.

Underage Players- Underage players must advise the level directors of their intentions to try out for a higher level no later than August 20. Under-­-age player movement is outlined in section 5.5.3 of the Policy and Procedures manual.

 

AA Model

SMHA will be following the Hockey Alberta AA model, a copy of this is available on the SMHA website.  In the Peewee-Midget levels SMHA must form teams in a timely manner for league play at all levels.  Should a player miss the Tier 2 evaluation session it will be at the discretion of the head coach and level director to decide if a spot will be held for that player. 

 

Bantam/Midget

Due to the timing of team selection and start of league play it is at the discretion of the level director in consultation with coaches to decide if players may be moved after the start of league play for evaluation purposes and eventual placement.
